Zero Gravity Massage Chair: The 5 Bestsellers of 2018 Reviewed

The cost of a zero gravity massage chair can vary greatly, but even if money is no object, don’t make the mistake of choosing based on price. Don’t bet the farm on 5-star ratings either. You have to know the whys behind those rave reviews, or they can be misleading.

We spent hundreds of hours researching the top 5, and each one is a bestseller for very different reasons. In this guide you’ll find all the details you need to know before you buy, including a brief explanation of “zero gravity”.

Zero Gravity Massage Chair - What Does It Mean?

What Does “Zero Gravity” Really Mean?

Sorry to disappoint, but no, the term “zero gravity” doesn’t mean you’re going to become weightless. It does, however, relate directly to rocket men. The concept comes to us from the space program, and it’s all about adjusting body position to relieve stress.

During liftoff, as the spacecraft is escaping Earth’s atmosphere, an astronaut’s body is subjected to sudden and intense increases in gravitational pull. One aspect of dealing with that impact is to evenly distribute those stresses, which is achieved by precise body positioning.

A zero gravity massage chair recreates the reclining position used by astronauts. This distributes your weight evenly across the chair, which relieves stresses on your body. You get all the benefits of the posture without the beating of a liftoff.

Will you actually feel weightless? Maybe. Some people swear that the level of stress reduction is such a relief that, in effect, you experience a sensation similar to that of being weightless. Regardless, another benefit of the zero gravity position is that it allows for a more intense massage experience.

It’s worth noting that this feature is not limited to massage chairs. A number of furniture manufacturers now offer zero gravity recliners, most of which cost far less than a full body massage chair.

How Our Top 5 Massage Chairs Are Alike

All of these models are large and heavy, but both Kahuna chairs and the BestMassage model will save you a little space because they can sit very close to the wall. If you remember the “wall-hugger” recliners, the principal is similar. Real Relax claims that it saves space but doesn’t provide details.

Each of these chairs offers full body massage. Technology differs among models, but they’re all designed to massage your entire back, hips, arms, feet, and calves. They all have heat in the back area, but two models add heat for legs or seat area as well.

Another commonality is that all these chairs have a high average consumer rating. That’s usually a good sign, but it can sometimes be deceiving. For instance the BestMassage model seems to be quite popular just because of its bargain price. That’s great, but don’t overlook one great big drawback. Below you’ll find details on that and lots more.

Zero Gravity Massage Chair Reviews

Here’s a closer look at each of our top 5 models, with details to help you determine whether one of these massage chairs is the best choice for you.

Kahuna Superior Massage Chair SM-7300

see it on Amazon
Perhaps the most attractive aspect of this Kahuna model is that it can accommodate larger, taller folks. The maximum weight load is 320 pounds. Width of the seat is 21″, and the shoulder area measures 24″ wide.

This is one of the few massage chairs on the market (at any price) that is suitable for those who are over six feet tall. The manufacturer recommends this chair for heights all the way up to 6’5″.

The SM-7300 also offers you more massage options than any of the other top sellers. Technique choices are kneading, tapping, kneading/tapping, shiatsu, and knocking. There are 3 speed levels and 5 air pressure levels.

The SL-Track with 6 Rollers system follows the length of the spine and extends underneath to buttocks and thighs. Roller width is adjustable to allow for a better fit for both larger and smaller framed people.

Air bags throughout the chair enhance the full-body massage and muscle targeting programs. Lower leg and foot massage includes rollers for soles of feet and air cells that wrap around the sides of your calves and even on top of each foot.

In addition to all the manual options you can choose from 9 auto programs designed for specific purposes or target areas:

  • Yoga Stretching – warm up, loosen muscles
  • Fast Recovery – sports massage therapy for muscle recovery
  • Pain Relief – relief for muscle aches
  • Relaxation – soft massage for rapid muscle relaxation
  • Athlete – aimed at sore/tense muscle recovery
  • Office Person Mode – focus on neck & shoulder muscles
  • Golfer Mode – focus on low back, hips, & legs
  • Dynamic Sport – vigorous full body massage to refresh & renew
  • Senior Mode – gentle massage for overall body comfort

The video below gives you a close look at this massage chair and some of its many terrific features (plus the music is very peaceful!).

What Do Customers Say?
It’s almost all good! Based on just over 100 online reviews, the average consumer rating on this chair is 4.5. Only 6 owners rated it lower than 4 stars.

This Kahuna gives you a very vigorous massage, which most owners love. However, a few noted that even in “Senior Mode” it can be a bit much for anyone who is frail or can only handle light pressure due to various physical reasons.

In fact, you’ll find lots of folks who love everything about this chair except for one thing – they find that the foot massage is too strong for comfort on bare feet. No one deems this a deal breaker because it’s easily solved by wearing thick socks or using a towel for padding.

Serious problems are rare, and the few owners who have needed to contact customer service report being pleased with the whole experience – quick response, friendly staff, issues resolved. Another good sign is that the seller actively monitors and responds to online customer reviews.

Pros & Cons

  • accommodates heights over 6 feet
  • huge range of options for massage techniques and manual settings
  • 9 automatic programs targeting specific needs
  • good customer service
  • cost (most expensive of these 5 bestsellers)
  • foot massage too powerful for some
  • not suitable for frail individuals or those who prefer only light pressure

Is This Chair Right For You?
The Kahuna SM-7300 is a quality zero gravity massage chair from a well-established, reputable company. It is the priciest of our top 5 yet still well under the cost of many other comparable models. It offers all the best features of full-body massage and has earned high ratings from happy owners on both product quality and customer service. This is a great choice for anyone who prefers a vigorous massage, and it’s one of the few massage chairs designed to accommodate people over 6 feet tall.

Kahuna Full Body Massage Chair LM-6800

see it on Amazon
This model is a small step down from SM-7300, but the Kahuna LM-6800 still gives you a great variety of features and usually sells for around $700 less. Before you read further, most important to know is this:

The maximum weight load of this massage chair is 220 pounds, and according to the manufacturer it is designed for heights up to 6′. It is also suggested that to get the best fit on the massage, you need to be at least 5’2″ tall.

If that will work for you, then it’s only a question of which you want most – more features or a lower price.

This chair has an L-Track with 4 Rollers system, dual foot roller, and air bags positioned for targeting shoulders, arms and calves. Heat therapy is available in both lower back and calf areas. Like the more expensive Kahuna, this model also includes computerized body scan technology and offers 3 zero gravity positions.

The 5 massage techniques on this chair are kneading, tapping, kneading/tapping, shiatsu, and rolling. There are 3 adjustment levels each for speed and pressure, plus an option for “Fixed Spot Massage” that makes the rollers stop to focus on a particular muscle area. You can also choose one of 6 automatic programs: Chiropractic, Athlete, Refreshing, Anti Stress, Rejuvenate, and Yoga Stretching.

This short video gives you a closer look at the chair and what it can do for you:

What Do Customers Say?
You’ll find very few bad reviews on this massage chair, but a few buyers do report receiving a defective chair. This appears to be the exception, and the good news is that for every online complaint you’ll also find a response from customer service. Kahuna has a good reputation and seems eager to resolve issues and keep customers happy.

Otherwise the only common complaint is that the foot massage is so strong it can be overkill on the bottoms of your feet. As with the other Kahuna model, this is easily fixed with thick socks or a folded towel for padding, so no one considers it a big deal.

On the positive side, owners praise this chair for being relatively easy to assemble, and they appreciate that it hugs the wall to save space. By far, though, the most loved feature is the Yoga stretch. It may be hard to understand how a chair can do a good stretch, but owners absolutely rave about it. Seriously. If you’ve never experienced this kind of thorough body stretch, you may be shocked at how well it can help relieve stress, improve circulation, and leave you refreshingly relaxed.

Pros & Cons

  • costs less than Kahuna SM-7300
  • full range of massage techniques plus speed & pressure settings
  • 6 automatic programs
  • includes heat massage for both back and calves
  • good customer service
  • height limit of 6′; weight limit of 220 pounds
  • has fewer automatic programs than Kahuna SM-7300
  • foot massage too strong for some

Is This Chair Right For You?
Don’t buy this chair if anyone who will be using it is taller than 6′ or over the weight limit. Take a look at the Kahuna SM-7300 instead.

For everyone else the LM-6800 is an excellent choice, maybe the best value in this entire price range. You get a quality product with all the most-wanted features, from an established company with a reputation for providing good customer service.

This is the only massage chair in our group that lets you enjoy heat therapy for both your back and legs. Another great extra is the Yoga stretching program, and if you’re like the vast majority of owners, this will become your favorite feature.

Relaxonchair MK-II Plus Massage Chair

see it on Amazon
This model sits right in the middle of our price range, and it’s included in our list because it has earned the distinction of the “Amazon’s Choice” label. But…why is it a bestseller?

First, feedback from owners is overwhelmingly positive. Legitimate complaints are rare, and anywhere you do find one you’ll also see evidence of customer service efforts to connect with the owner and try to resolve the issue.

Another big plus for this model is cost. Feature-wise this model is very close to the Kahuna LM-6800, but it sells for a couple hundred dollars less. In fact, both these models include at least a few features you see on competing brands that are priced up to $3,000 or even more.

Massage techniques include kneading, tapping, kneading/tapping, shiatsu, and rolling. Manual settings give you 3 levels of speed control and 3 for air bag intensity control. The four automatic programs for deep tissue massage and full body stretching are:

  • Deep Massage – full body, alternating 5 techniques
  • Comfort – includes fixed spot massage
  • Recovery – for better circulation and energy level
  • Decompression – full body stretching

The last of the four, Decompression, combines massage with stretching for your back and legs. If you’re a runner, this may well be your favorite program for its decompression benefits.

What Do Customers Say?
Once again a common complaint is that the foot massage on this chair can be too rugged for some. And once again, owners aren’t upset over this since you can either wear thick socks or just turn off the foot rollers.

Also mentioned fairly often is that the remote is not very intuitive and doesn’t come with clear instructions. Still, most of them agree that it’s easy enough to figure out after you use it a bit.

On the plus side this model gets very high praise for quality, performance, and customer service. Assembly is super simple – only a single step with no tools required. Owners like the stretching feature, though to be honest they don’t rave about it as much as those who’ve bought the Kahuna models.

Pros & Cons

  • mid-price range
  • full range of massage techniques plus 3 speed & pressure levels
  • 4 automatic programs
  • good customer service
  • remote can be confusing
  • foot massage too vigorous for some

Is This Chair Right For You?
The closest rival of this chair is the Kahuna LM-6800. Both offer good quality and a nice variety of features, and both are suitable for anyone up to about 6 feet in height. The stretching program on the Kahuna may be slightly better, but the Relaxonchair MK-II Plus costs less (you can usually save about $200). The general consensus of owners is that the Relaxonchair MK-II is a very good buy for this price range.

BestMassage Full Body Zero Gravity Shiatsu Massage Chair

see it on Amazon
This is one of the two bargain priced models among the five top sellers. It has one big plus and one big minus:

Good News – This is the lowest priced model with an L-Track with Rollers massage system.

Bad News – Customer service ranges from very poor to non-existent.

There is no website for the manufacturer or distributor of this brand. If you have questions or problems, your only option is to deal with the third party seller on Amazon. The jury is still out on that.

In recent months the seller has begun to respond to online complaints from owners. This is encouraging, but as yet there are no reports on whether unhappy owners are able to get their issues resolved.

If that’s a deal breaker for you, another model in this low price range is the Real Relax Massage Chair below. If not, this chair does have lots of good points to consider.

Unlike the other bargain model, the BestMassage chair has an L-Track with 4 Rollers system for back and hips massage. The chair includes airbags throughout for full body massage, with a choice of 3 levels of air pressure intensity. Specific techniques include rolling, kneading, and shiatsu. There is combined air pressure/roller massage for feet.

The 4 pre-programmed settings are Relax, Extend, Recover, and Refresh. The “Refresh” program is somewhat less intense than the others. Also, one nice little bonus feature is that these BestMassage chairs have built-in, Bluetooth-enabled speakers.

This model is suitable for heights of approximately 5 to 6 feet. The footrest can be extended, but according to owners it probably won’t be of any help if you’re taller than six feet.

What Do Customers Say?
Feedback on this chair is limited, with only about 75 online reviews, but the vast majority of owners give it 4 or 5 stars – mostly 5. Favorite features are both the rolling foot massage and the L-shaped frame that enables roller massage for your back and down under your hips.

Most owners also like the vigorous massage you get from this chair. A few thought it a bit too intense, but for an easy fix they just used padding such as a folded towel.

(Lots of folks have mentioned another good idea for cushioning an over-aggressive massage chair – a Yoga mat. It can be used as is for a single layer or doubled for extra padding, and you can also easily cut it to fit your chair.)

As for negative comments, a few people claim that the heat is below average, and a couple mention that the neck massage is not that great – not terrible, just not outstanding.

However, the really serious complaints come from owners who have experienced a problem with the chair. Reports from those folks are that customer service is very bad, or completely unavailable.

Some possible good news is that in recent months the seller has begun responding to online complaints with offers to help. So far it’s too early to tell whether those unhappy owners are getting satisfactory results.

Pros & Cons

  • bargain price
  • lowest cost for chair with L-Track Rollers system
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • very poor customer service (or none at all)
  • no company/distributor website; only information source is Amazon
  • neck massage somewhat inferior

Is This Chair Right For You?

On one hand this model could be considered a great value since it includes lots of features for a bargain price. In fact, lots of owners praise it for being such a good value.

The drawback is the questionable customer service. One bit of advice is to know who you’re buying from. On Amazon, click the link of the third party seller, check their reputation, and then go search the web to see what else you can find, good or bad.

If the BestMassage makes you uncomfortable (corny pun, right?!), there’s another option in this price range. Read about the Real Relax Massage Chair in our next, and last, review below.

Real Relax Massage Chair Recliner

see it on Amazon
Last on our list is the least expensive of our bestsellers. This could well be considered a much better value than the other low-priced model from BestMassage, but with one caveat.

Unlike the other four zero gravity massage chairs on our list, the Real Relax chair does not have a built-in L-Track with Rollers system. What you get instead is a kneading massage from fixed, rotating massage points.

Also be aware that with these fixed massage points, the width of the back massage can’t be adjusted. If an L-Track system is a priority, you don’t want this chair.

Otherwise it has some definite advantages over the other bargain brand. One is that it’s easy to find the company website that includes contact and other information such as warranty details.

Features of this model include: 8 fixed massage points to target neck, back, and waist areas; 50 air bags to massage shoulders, arms, seat & legs; optional heat in seat area and foot rest; 4 preset programs; and built-in Bluetooth speaker and USB port.

This chair does not have a stretching feature, but it does offer pre-programmed settings that use various massage methods to provide a good experience. You also have the option to add vibration to the seat massage.

The footrest can be extended, but only by a few inches. Height limit on this model is 6 feet, but you’ll find a few reports claiming that it’s hard to get a good calf massage if you’re very close to that limit.

For shorter people, it may be harder to target your shoulder area. In the reclined position you may be able to scoot back enough to position yourself for a better shoulders massage.

What Do Customers Say?
The majority of owners think it’s great, as evidenced by all the 4 and 5 star reviews. A few even mention that they expected the fixed point massage to be a drawback, but after using the chair they actually prefer the stationary massage to the rollers system.

They also like using the Bluetooth connection to play tunes from their phones, and a few have noted that the chair’s own music is relaxing and peaceful.

Assembly is not difficult. The manufacturer’s instructions aren’t too good, but most owners found it easy enough to just go by the photos. On the outside chance that you get stuck, there’s a video on YouTube.

Bad reviews are rare. To date only one buyer claims that customer service would not respond. Everyone else says exactly the opposite. Another good sign is that the seller monitors online reviews and tries to connect with customers who have complaints or issues.

Pros & Cons

  • lowest cost for zero gravity massage chair
  • Bluetooth speakers & USB port
  • good customer service
  • no L-Track Rollers system
  • massage width cannot be adjusted
  • shoulder massage somewhat inferior for shorter people

Is This Chair Right For You?
Plenty of satisfied customers feel that the Real Relax model is a terrific value if your expectations are realistic. You don’t get all the best bells & whistles in a bargain model. What you can expect is a reasonably good massage as well as all the benefits of zero gravity positioning, all for less than $700. The handy USB port and Bluetooth speakers with built-in music make for nice little extras.

This model is a good choice for bargain shoppers. It should also appeal to tire kickers. Are you sure you really want a massage chair? Would you just like to test the waters? If so this might be for you. If it turns out you don’t love it or use it every day, you won’t have to feel guilty for making such a huge investment in it.

Summing It Up

To recap, anyone who is over 6 feet tall will absolutely want to look at the Kahuna SM-7300. If height isn’t a concern, then the Kahuna LM-6800 is the best overall zero gravity massage chair, giving you the most features at a price considerably lower than high end models.

Amazon’s Choice is the Relaxonchair. The brand is not as well known as Kahuna, but this Relaxonchair has features very similar to the Kahnuna LM-6800 and sells for a couple hundred dollars less.

Bargain shoppers can choose between the BestMassage or Real Relax models. The BestMassage has an L-Track Rollers system and costs just under $1,000. With the Real Relax model you only get fixed point massage, but at just under $700 it’s the least expensive of all the bestsellers.
